That time I decided I needed a new hobby

After I completed my 30 before 30 list (okay I missed 5 things but that's not a terrible thing) I was wondering what I was going to do with myself.

I've done the 101 things in 1001 days.
I've got a bucket list and a reserve bucket list.
I'm about to finish my 100 happy days project.
I attempted a 365 photo project and made it all the way to 281.

I've gone to chocolate school.
I play roller derby.
I shoot film photography.
I like to cook and bake.
I like to hike.

I have a lot of hobbies that I enjoy and for whatever reason I decided the other day I needed a new one.

Okay it was less "I'm going to find a hobby" and more "hey this would be a cool hobby!"

I've discovered I like mixology...aka I like making cocktails and playing at bartending. It all kind of started last year when I bought an amazingly punny book Tequila Mockingbird. A hilarious book full of drink recipes based on literature. Amazingness. Years ago I owned a book about the classic cocktails from famous American hotel bars. So I guess I've always been a little interested in cocktails. And I've been known to make one hell of a jelloshot.

Fun fact: I didn't really like alcohol until I was in my 20's and I never really liked beer until a few years ago.

So why this sudden interest in making cocktails and various cool shots.

It all started with a bottle of bitters. Actually it started with a lack of a bottle of bitters. I needed a bottle of orange bitters for a few of the drink recipes I wanted to try. I came up empty so I decided, it's probably something I could make. Hmmmmmm.

Turns out it totally is.

So right now in our liquor cabinet we have a bottle of peels and spices steeping in some high proof vodka.


As I plowed my way through the Bartending 101 class skillshare offers I was thinking that this all made sense. I love to cook. I love to bake. I've played around with molecular gastronomy. I really like playing around with flavours. OH COURSE making weird martini's and layered drinks would appeal to me! Hell I discovered today I could make smoked cocktails. Yup, my new hobby colliding with John's hobby of smoking meat. Yup. And I'm super excited about this.

Not sure if my liver is.
