Confessions of a Blogger

I saw this posted by Gina at Sweet Serenity (you should read her blog it's awesome!) I thought it was fabulous so I figured I would give it whirl.

1. When did you first start blogging and why

I started blogging over 10 years ago at Xanga and bloopdiary. Basically I would cross post but after a while I decided that was silly and stuck to Xanga for the most part. The blog was private, then public and then private.  I started blogging in my first year of university. A super confusing time for me and I just wanted to get it out into words and into the universe. I've always been a prolific journal writer and I took to blogging like expats take to jars of peanut butter from North America.

I started blogging as The Dubious Hausfrau over 3 years ago when I left my job after being burnt out. I needed to find myself again and John actually suggested I blog the journey. So really, as much as he complains about my blogging sometimes, it's his fault.

2. Have you had any past online presence?

Yes, but never like this. My xanga blog was for me and a group of friends and a few other people. I had put myself out there with my blog before with disastrous results in my personal life so I kept it to myself and would only mention it when asked or prompted.

3. When did you become serious about your blog?

Okay I'm going to be honest and say I've never become "serious" about blogging. Blogging for me is about writing first and branding second. Yeah I have continuity with my social networking stuff, I know how to market my blog, I know what my stats and analytics are telling me but here's the thing, this is not a job for me like it is for some other bloggers. And there's nothing wrong with that. But for my this blog is our love letter to the community we left behind saying, "we're okay." Now if this eventually turns into something more, heck it lead to us being an a Canadian tire commerical, awesome. But that was never the main purpose here. It never will be.

4. What was your first blog post.

My first blog post here was called Hello Stranger. Basically setting the stage for how this blog came into being. It's evolved in a huge way since then which I think is wonderful. My second blog post was about laundry.

5. What have been your biggest challenges blogging.

Like many bloggers I struggle with what to keep to myself and what to put out there. As much as I want to blog authentically there are some things that are just off limits to me. I've had friends who blog everything and that's just not me. I don't want to read it so why would I write it. If that works for you and your blog, great but it doesn't work for me.

However I don't shy away from blogging the scratchy bits. I know when I started blogging I didn't want to blog the tough stuff. Especially after we moved to Switzerland. I didn't want to burst the bubble of happiness, adventure and joy. But lets be honest, this is hard so while I wanted to let everyone know we're okay I did want people to know that sometimes this sucks!

6. What is the most rewarding thing about blogging?

I recently had someone tell me they read my blog before moving to Switzerland. Seriously. I was at one of our monthly expat dinners and someone at the table said they were googled pros and cons of living here and my blog came up. She said it helped her. This was huge for me.

7. What is the most discouraging thing about blogging?

The numbers game it can be. Bloggers can become obsessed with stats, return visits, connections and unique visitors. I've always felt there is a really thin line between being aware of the numbers and becoming obsessed with them. I know a fewI know my stats, I keep track of them but that's kind of about it. I mostly do it because I'm curious about this kind of thing. Mostly I'm curious about search words. Those can be down right HILARIOUS.

8. What is your lasting inspiration or motivation?

Other than the fact that I just like hearing myself talk?!

I wouldn't say inspiration but my motivation is creating a space in the little corner of the internet for other trailing spouses that makes them feel a little less alone. This is my "me too!!" for them.

9. What is your blogging dirty little secret?

I have no idea what I'm doing most of the time but I'm really good at looking like I do.
